The Carers Cook Book
by Carolyn Peacock
Inspired by Angela Hamlin of Draycott Nursing & Care
The idea of The Carer's Cook Book came to Angela Hamlin after she had been running Draycott Nursing & Care for sometime. It was very soon apparent that the majority of feedback regarding a nurse or a carer was whether they could cook or not and how good they were at it.
Meals, for many reasons, were the highlight of the day. On interviewing prospective nurses and carers they were asked about their cooking skills. Many replied that they were good cooks - but on delving deeper, their range often appeared to be from sausages to stir-fry!
The initial plan was to put together a few recipes to help the carers and nurses. From there it has snowballed to what it is today. The book has been favourably received, and will not only be of help to carers and nurses but to anyone looking after someone, or even for those on their own. It has even been popular among students.
Foreword by Joanna Lumley
When I was first asked to write a foreword to 'The Carer's Cookbook', I responded immediately by saying, 'What a delicious and good idea! I'd be so proud to be connected with this excellent venture.'
The role of the carer is unique and takes into account every aspect of a patient's life. Producing appetising meals must be essential in nursing a person back to health. Having so often come across people who need care at home, I fully appreciate how important meals are to those who are confined to their home.
The aim of this book is to be an easy reference book to those in the caring profession. The carers have often not had formal cookery training.
I am delighted that profits from the sale of the book will go towards sponsoring training days for carers. To quote George Bernard Shaw (1856-1950), 'There is no love sincerer than the love of food'.
I wish this book every success.
